Vernon DeMark Memorial Scholarship

Background:This scholarship, created in 2013, is in honor of the memory of Vernon G. DeMark who was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Christmas Eve 1931. As a teenager he came to the Caldwell area, attended Middleton High School, and began his career in auto mechanics. Over the years he worked for Burns Chevrolet (Caldwell), Tom Edmark’s Motors, and was a partner in Tott’s Phillips 66 gas station which was on the south east corner of 10th and Cleveland. Vernon married Donna Tilton in 1954 and together they built the family DeMark Auto business. The Business evolved from a used car lot to a complete automotive repair facility and parts store. Vernon ran this business for over 50 years. Vernon and Donna had three children, Lori (who married Chuck Stout currently chairman of the Board of Trustees Caldwell Schools), Tony (who married Bonnie Jones), and Craig (who married Becky Hacker). All three children and their spouses are graduates of Caldwell High School. Vernon served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Caldwell School District for 20 years appointed July of 1985 and resigned for health reasons in April of 2005. He was a true advocate for public education, a huge supporter of athletic programs, and was very involved with community sports and athletics. He was a devoted family man, who enjoyed spending time with his family at his cabin in Donnelly, hunting, fishing, camping, and racing. Nothing on this earth was more important to Vernon than his family. The Vernon G. DeMark Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has been involved in community service or extracurricular activities, and is planning to enroll in a vocational education, trade school, or community college program. The DeMark scholarship was endowed by gifts from Vernon’s wife Donna, by his children, memorial gifts, and by financial gifts from each of his grandchildren.
